Today I had the honor of meeting one of Puerto Rico’s greatest artists: William R. Clegg.

Mr. Clegg is an authentic 100% true commercial artist, illustrator and fine art painter. He handles traditional mediums with the same easiness that he does digital art. He had always been one of my Puerto Ricans favorites due to one thing: draftsmanship. Everybody knows how big I am on that. Rockwell, Da Vinci, Raphael, you name it, if it was a good artist, chances are he/she had good draftsmanship. Basically, that is the ability of drawing and drawing well. William R. Clegg has that and more. He had created one of the most amazing series of Puerto Rican typical iconic figures of my favorite subject to paint: “el jibaro” (the country man of Puerto Rico).  These pieces were rendered in ink and watercolor.

William R. Clegg’s career expands for more than 25 years. During that period he had taught art to some of the most known artists in Puerto Rico. He had been responsible for some of the most famous logos and labels for several consumer products in the history of advertising in the island. 

At 70 something he is still a force to be reckoned with. Alert and in fantastic shape, this New York born creative artist still posses the pizzazz and pulse necessary to create fantastic pieces of art.

What a privilege it was to meet the man behind the art.
